Maca Miracle Bars: The Next Acai?

Sunday, September 20th, 2009

While we’ve all observed acai’s huge rise in popularity, there are other superfoods from around the world entering the radar.

Maca is a root vegetable and medicinal herb, found mostly in Peru and consumed and traded for centuries. It is served as a porridge, fermented into a drink, added to salads and prepared in countless other ways.  More recently, it has found its way into health food and specialty products. Similar to the acai berry, noni fruit, goji berry and mangosteen juices, maca has been introduced to North American dieters.  It’s been suggested that maca extracts  have health benefits such as helping with fertility.

Treehugger shares an interesting review of a Potent Life maca nutrition bar.  He’s an excerpt:

“The production of Maca is fair trade and supports indigenous communities and is grown organically and harvested ecologically so you can feel good about that part if you do purchase the bar. Plus most, if not all, of the other ingredients that go into the bars are either organic or chosen for their health benefits.”
