Bissinger’s Confections of St. Louis has a history dating back hundreds of years to a tradition of European confections. But stodgy they are not. While you may find chocolate assortments, chocolate dipped fruit, truffles and caramels, Bissinger’s also has a line of gummy pandas that are exploding with antioxidants.

Take for example, the acai blueberry gummy pandas, one of the first acai confections we’ve seen from a traditional candy maker. Made with organic ingredients, the blueberry acai gummy pandas are made with dried blueberry, dried acai and organic sugar, among other good things. It was also awarded “Outstanding Confection” at the 54th Summer Fancy Food Show in New York City.

Canadian television has notified viewers that certain acai berry products, including acai weight loss and anti-aging supplements are impure, and that they contain trace elements of slidenafil, also known as the prescription drug Viagra. Many of these acai products are available for purchase throughout North America through the Internet. Serious side effects can occur when Viagra is combined with other medications, so steer clear of these products until we have more information.

This was an interesting feature on CNBC discussing the acai berry with Lindsay Duncan, founder of Genesis Today. His company produces the acai berry juice sold at Walmart. We’re thrilled that more people are being exposed to the health benefits of drinking acai berry juice. We’d be interested in how the Genesis Today product compares with other acai berry juices on the market today.

Here’s how the relationship between Genesis Today and Walmart began, according to Duncan.

“They [Wal-Mart] just wanted to learn about my 27 years of helping people heal their body with nutrition,” he said. “It’s kind of what like Whole Foods has done. They believe that food’s your medicine. And that’s what we do, and they wanted to pick my brain and find out what foods do I believe are the most healthy foods in the world.”

With so many packaged foods like cereals being fortified with vitamins and probiotics, it only makes sense that research find ways to nutritionalize favorites like ice cream. This would transform regular ice cream a “functional food,” or a food that offers essential vitamins and minerals.

A study at the University of Missouri is researching ways to make ice cream both satisfying and healthy through the use of natural foods. The acai berry and grapes are two ingredients they’re using to prototype a healthy ice cream. We’ve enjoyed an acai berry flavored ice cream in Rio de Janeiro and it was absolutely delicious and commonplace. Not sure how healthy it was, but we enjoy the acai berry just the same.

Cropping up in convenience stores lately, you’ll find Revive Energy Mints, made with superfoods like the acai berry, mangosteen and the goji berry. In addition to superfoods, energy is provided by caffeine, green tea and ginseng. Anyone try these yet? One mint apparently contains as much boost as an entire energy drink, contains no sugar and is designed to prevent the “crash” associated with energy products.

Another personal care product now available is the Alba Botanica Rainforest Acai Antioxidant Shampoo. As Kiehl’s and other beauty and cosmetic companies are introducing acai beauty products, Alba has created a nutrient-rich acai shampoo which is said to provide antioxidants, along with nourishing oils to the hair.

We haven’t tried this yet, but Alba claims that they source their ingredients sustainably, an important point given the environmental impact increased acai production has created. According to their website, Alba Botanica also supports rainforest education through the Amazon Center for Environmental Education and Research.(ACEER).
